Parsing Dreams
Parsing Dreams is the 2nd virtual exhibition of Printmakers Open Forum's Broadside Salon, curated by Adam Finkelstein and James Meara, editors of The Hand Magazine
STATEMENT BY THE CURATORS:
We would like to thank Shelley Thorstensen for inviting us to select a group of images for you to enjoy. And thanks to the artists for sharing your visions with us. We hope visitors to this collection will look deeper into the stories the images tell. Go to the artist’s pages or websites, learn where they are coming from. Make an effort to know what their stories are about. And then, most importantly, go find a way to tell your own story because when we feel heard we are more likely to listen.
The images in this collection are examples of two things. On the one hand they show the diversity and variety of the human experience and on the other they show the similarity and connection between different people. The constant theme in our curating is duality and diversity. It seems counterproductive to select a group of images that all tell the same story. If art serves any purpose, it must be to express our own experiences but also to understand the experiences of others. There is no single vision that is correct, no point of view that is above or below another. The primary consideration is: does this image tell a compelling story?
Sometimes the story is one that is utterly foreign to us. It is a story that teaches us, enlightens us, and opens our mind to new possibilities. This story conditions our sympathies and helps us understand something anew.
Sometimes the story is one that is utterly familiar to us. It is a story that we know, reassures us, and closes our mind in an old embrace. This story reaffirms our convictions and helps us know we are understood.
This collection of images is all over the place, aesthetically. And that’s OK, because such is life. But they all told us an interesting story. There are images that tell of intimacy and solitude, mystery and familiarity, spirituality and physicality, interiors and exteriors.
